About our products
We've gone to great lengths to find and use plastic pots that meet our high standards. This means that they have to be 100% safe in every respect. All our materials are approved and tested, and meet all the safety requirements for materials that are in contact with food. Although recycling schemes vary depending on what area of the country you live in, our pots are designed to be 100% recyclable and can be chipped for re-moulding into guttering, for example.
Absolutely! All our recipes have to be treated as fresh once opened and this also means you can freeze them. We recommend that you freeze within 24 hours of opening, and pop them into a freezer safe tub. If you have just started weaning you could dispense one of our pots into little ice cube trays to avoid waste, and have just the right amount for your little one.
Our food is cooked by steaming under pressure and this, together with the airtight seal, gives Plum pots and pouches a 12-month shelf life without the need for any preservatives. Once opened, of course, you do need to treat the contents of the pot as fresh, store it in the fridge, and use it within 2 days for our 4 months plus range, or 24 hours for our 7 and 10 months plus recipes. And if you've heated a pouch or pot and your baby doesn't eat it all, the leftovers should be thrown away for safety's sake.
Unlike some baby food brands on the market, there is no added sugar in Plum products. The sugar content varies from product to product depending on the amount of natural sugars present in the fruit and vegetables.
Yes! Plum can be taken anywhere with you - that's the advantage of our pots and pouches.
If you're travelling on an aeroplane, you can take any of our 100-gram stage 1 or stage 2 dessert pouches along in your hand luggage with no problem. However, you probably won't be able to take our pots on board, unless you open them and taste some as per Customs regulations. (Sadly, this is because we don't have the weight stated on our pots.)
You can also pop our pots or pouches in your suitcase, but please be aware that they should be treated as fragile and wrapped up in a carrier bag just in case they get bashed around a bit too much!
We have recently opened our own online shop - click here - to have a look. We are now able to deliver to the Republic Ireland.
About our ingredients
All ingredients are organic, responsibly sourced and of the highest possible quality. They are also all 'Baby Grade' which means they have had to pass stringent quality checks. We source ingredients from relevant countries - for example, our mangoes are from India, bananas are from Ecuador and our quinoa is from Bolivia. All our ingredients are shipped to our manufacturer, not air-freighted, to save on carbon emissions.
Water is a necessary part of the cooking process in Plum recipes. Quinoa, in particular, absorbs a lot of water as it cooks and softens. Other ingredients, such as spinach and sweetcorn, also absorb water when they are cooked. Without this cooking water, the products would have an unappealing grainy, solid texture. Parents can rest assured that no Plum recipe is 'diluted' with water.
About our company
We make every effort to make responsible choices wherever we possibly can, including within our own office environment. We serve Fairtrade and organic tea and coffee in our offices, have a recycling policy relating to paper, cardboard, plastic, cans and glass, and have even transferred our telecommunications to the UK's only ethical telephone company, The Phone Co-operative, and have invested in solar panels to generate as much of our own electricity as we can. We do this because to us, it's all part of the same ethos - we want to take good care of the world we're handing on to our children (and yours!)
We've carefully selected a few specialist food manufacturers in the UK, France and Germany who have the right skills and equipment to create a range of foods with the extremely high quality of flavour and texture that we insist on. We also check on the process frequently to make sure that all our ingredients and processes meet rigorous UK and EU quality and safety standards. We think that quality shines through in every bite!
The simple answer is, everything!
At Plum we use only the highest-quality raw ingredients, rather than buying cheaply in bulk to save money. What this means is that we can tell you all about where your baby's food actually comes from and how it's grown: for instance, the lamb we use in our recipes is raised according to the highest organic standards at Rhug Estate in Wales (which also supplies more than a few Michelin-starred restaurants). We source as many of our blueberries as we can from wild forests in Eastern Europe, because their flavour is incredible and their antioxidant content is second to none. And a large percentage of the bananas we use in our fruit purees are grown on innovative farms in the mountains of Central America, where they're planted alongside other organic crops like cocoa and citrus to naturally improve the local ecology and cut down on pests without using chemicals.
At Plum, we also tend to include more of the 'good stuff' in our recipes. For example, our Mango and Banana recipe contains a whopping 35% mango puree (whereas some other fruit purees have "mango" in the name, but only 8% mango in the pouch). We never, ever use fillers or bulking ingredients like white potato, rice or cornflour in our recipes - only the finest, responsibly sourced raw ingredients. And each and every ingredient in our recipes is there for a reason: it's a nutritional powerhouse, a true superfood.
Our aim is to give your baby delicious, wholesome and balanced nutrition, carefully created to suit each stage of weaning. Plum's price is comparable to that of other brands, but what's inside is a whole lot better. And that's what we call quality.
